Thanks to advances in treatment, more and more people are living for several years after diagnosis. However, the physical and psychological aftereffects of the disease and its treatments can persist well beyond the first five years and significantly impair their quality of life.

A comprehensive analysis of 166 studies involving over 82,000 patients reveals that the most common side effects include difficulty swallowing, severe dry mouth, speech disorders, and chronic pain. These symptoms, often underestimated, can worsen over time and complicate essential activities such as eating, speaking, or breathing. For example, dry mouth and swallowing problems frequently intensify after radiotherapy, with repercussions lasting up to ten years after treatment ends.

While treatments combining surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy are effective in eliminating tumors, they often leave lasting effects. Patients also report persistent fatigue, voice changes, or limitations in mouth opening. These physical impairments are sometimes accompanied by psychological consequences, such as increased anxiety, depression, or feelings of social isolation.

Yet studies show that the assessment of these long-term aftereffects remains uneven. Medical follow-ups often focus on detecting recurrence or survival, without always considering the overall impact on daily life. Evaluation methods vary from study to study, making it difficult to compare results and implement appropriate solutions.

Researchers also highlight a lack of data on patient experiences, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where the incidence of these cancers is high. Cultural differences, access to care, and lifestyle habits strongly influence how individuals live with these aftereffects.

Improving long-term care would require a more standardized approach, including regular quality-of-life assessments and enhanced psychological and social support. Targeted interventions, such as exercise programs to regain better mobility or support therapies, could help patients cope better with these persistent challenges. Better coordination between specialists and general practitioners would also be essential to provide tailored follow-up for each situation.

Information and Sources

Scientific Reference

DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/s00520-026-10443-1

Title: Long-term outcomes among individuals living with and beyond head and neck cancer: a scoping review

Journal: Supportive Care in Cancer

Publisher: Springer Science and Business Media LLC

Authors: Liana Fillo; Hanna Ginther; Joseph C.
